چکیده

Together with my partner, Pablo Solis, we demonstrate the particle-like nature of light as characterized by photons with quantized and distinct energies each dependent only on its frequency (ν) and scaled by Planck’s constant (h). Using data obtained through the bombardment of an alkali metal surface (in our case, potassium) by light of varying frequencies, we calculate Planck’s constant, h to be 1.92 × 10 ± 1.08 × 10eV · s.

The Photoelectric Effect: Determination of Planck’s Constant

We test Einstein’s theory of the photoelectric effect, which predicts a linear relation between the energy of light incident on a metal surface and the energy of the emitted electrons. We determine the electron stopping voltage as a function of frequency of incident radiation by illuminating a potassium cathode and constraining the wavelength of incident radiation using several optical band-pas...

Advanced information on the Nobel Prize in Physics 2001

At the beginning of the twentieth century, the quantum nature of thermal electromagnetic radiation was a subject of intense interest. This was sparked by Max Planck’s discovery that the spectral distribution of light emerging from a thermal body could be explained only if the radiators emitting the energy occurred in discrete energy states. This induced Albert Einstein to conclude in 1905 that ...

On fluctuations in electromagnetic radiation

The question of fluctuations in electromagnetic radiation played an important part during the first period of the development of quantum theory. After having introduced (Einstein 1905) the conception of light quanta or photons in order to explain the observed phenomena of the photoelectric effect, Einstein (1909) considered the consequences of this idea for other properties of the radiation. Pl...

An iterative method to estimate x-ray attenuation coefficients in computed tomography

Introduction: The basis of image formation in Computed Tomography (CT) lies in the x-ray linear attenuation coefficient of the scanned material. Compton scattering and photoelectric effect are the dominant interactions of the x-ray photons with the subject, in the range of diagnostic radiology. These two coefficients are important in tissue characterization by Dual-Energy CT (D...

The Origin of the Planck’s Constant

In this paper, we discuss an equation which does not contain the Planck’s constant, but it will turn out the Planck’s constant when we apply the equation to the problems of particle diffraction. PACS numbers: 03.65Bz, 03.65.Ca, 03.65.Pm
